Beaufort Castle to be renovated

Lebanon’s Minister of Culture announced that the historic Beaufort Castle will finally get a much needed facelift after many years of neglect. Thanks to a financial commitment from the Kuwait Fund for Economic Development that will contribute 70% of the total renovation costs of around $3 Million dollars, Beaufort Castle will be renovated and have new lighting and drainage systems installed.

Beaufort Castle, not to be confused with Beaufort Castle in Scotland, is a 12th century era Crusader fortress that lies in south Lebanon near the village of Arnoun atop a 2100 foot (700 meter) hill. The Crusaders, Mamlouks and Ottaman took control of the castle at various points in history. More recently, Israel captured Beaufort castle in 1982 and relinquished control in May 2000 when Israeli forces withdrew from southern Lebanon. During the 1982-2o00 period of Israeli occupation, castle suffered extensive damage as it was used as a military base by Israeli forces.
